Lawns on Arvada's Farm Soils
Hydroseeding in Arvada is usually done on soil with a hundred years of farming behind it. Miners who gave up on gold in the 1860s turned to the rich bottom land along Ralston Creek and Clear Creek, and the town eventually had 42 irrigation ditches serving its farms. In the first half of the twentieth century Arvada called itself the Celery Capital of the World. Many neighborhoods now sit on that old cropland, which can be very good for grass when the topsoil was kept and poor where it was stripped during building.
Checking what is under the yard
Before we spray a new lawn we dig a few test holes. Where we find dark, loose soil, a light rake and starter fertilizer may be all the lawn seeding needs. Where builders left compacted subsoil at the surface, we recommend bringing in topsoil and fine grading first so water soaks in rather than running off.
Ditches and creek banks
Arvada's ditch network goes back to 1861, when Benjamin Wadsworth began digging the irrigation ditch that later took his name. Lots along a ditch or along Ralston Creek need care during grading so loose soil does not end up in the water. We set silt fence or wattles along the bank side, keep equipment off the edge, and seed banks with a mix that roots quickly, often under an erosion control blanket.
Gold Strike Park and creek corridors
The site of Lewis Ralston's 1850 gold find is now Gold Strike Park on Ralston Creek. Creek corridors like this one are a reminder that Arvada drains east through a few main channels. Our grading crews shape yard swales to carry water toward the street or an approved outlet, and they can trench for drain pipe where a surface swale will not work.
Builder and infill work
Arvada keeps adding homes on its west side and in redeveloped pockets near Olde Town. We handle hydroseeding for builders after final grade, along with silt fence installation and inlet protection while lots are open.

Arvada Questions
My Arvada lot used to be farmland. Do I still need topsoil?
Sometimes not. If the original soil was left in place it can grow grass well. We test a few spots and only recommend topsoil where the surface is compacted subsoil or construction fill.
There is an irrigation ditch at the back of my yard. Can you seed the bank?
Yes. We protect the water with silt fence or wattles during work and usually use an erosion control blanket over the seed on the bank.
Can you fix a yard that floods the patio after storms?
Our grading crew can reshape the yard to tip storm runoff away from the patio and foundation, trench for a drain line where needed, and then we hydroseed the disturbed ground.
Do you seed new builder lots in west Arvada?
Yes. We seed after final grade and can install silt fence and inlet protection while the lots are still open.
