Keeping Job Site Mud Out of the Gutter
Silt fence and construction BMPs (best management practices) are the sediment controls that keep soil from a Denver job site out of the street, the storm drains and the creeks. We install silt fence, inlet protection, wattles and related controls for builders, developers and general contractors, and we maintain them so the site still passes inspection after the third thunderstorm, not just the day it went in. If you are looking for silt fence contractors who will also seed and stabilize the site when grading is done, that is our whole job.
When controls are required
The City and County of Denver may require a Stormwater Management Plan and a Construction Activities Stormwater Discharge Permit for construction, including demolition, that disturbs one acre or more, for sites that are part of a larger development plan, for sites with significant erosion potential, and for work that disturbs contaminated soils or places fill in waters of the US. Developments over one acre, residential and commercial alike, need that permit. The plan shows where silt fence, inlet protection and other controls go, and inspectors check that they are in place and working.
Getting the fence to actually trap sediment
A silt fence does its job only when runoff pools behind it long enough for the sediment to drop out. That means the fabric is buried in a trench, not laid on the surface; posts are on the downhill side; the fence follows the contour so water does not run along it to one end; and the ends turn uphill. A fence installed straight up and down a slope, or with its bottom edge loose, becomes a channel. On Denver's clay-loam soils, a thunderstorm will find every gap.
Inlet protection
Storm inlets near a site get sediment barriers so runoff is filtered before it enters the system. The right type depends on whether the inlet is in a paved street or an unpaved area and how much flow it takes: silt fence rings, straw bale or sandbag barriers, gravel and mesh, or devices that sit inside the grate. Inlet protection in a street must not cause flooding, so we size and place it with that in mind.
Maintenance through the storm season
Sediment control is not install-and-forget. Denver gets most of its precipitation from April through August, much of it from afternoon thunderstorms, and each storm can fill a silt fence or bury an inlet filter. We offer inspection and maintenance visits: removing built-up sediment, resetting undermined fence, replacing torn fabric and swapping out spent inlet filters. When the site is stabilized, we pull the controls and seed the disturbed strip they leave behind.
Final stabilization
Controls come out only when the ground they protect is stabilized. Because we also do hydroseeding, erosion control blankets and grading, one crew can carry a site from perimeter control through final seeding.
Sediment Control We Install
Placed to your stormwater plan and maintained until the site is stable.
Silt fence installation
Trenched, staked fabric fence along contours and site perimeters.
Reinforced silt fence
Stabilized fence for higher flows and longer runs.
Inlet protection
Barriers and filter devices at storm inlets on and near the site.
Wattles and check dams
Straw wattles on slopes and in swales to slow water and trap sediment.
Inspection and maintenance
Sediment removal, repairs and replacements after storms.
Removal and restoration
Controls pulled after stabilization and the disturbed strip seeded.

Silt Fence and Inlet Protection Costs
| Item | Rate (2025 state DOT erosion-control rate schedule) |
|---|---|
| Unstabilized silt fence, per 100 ft | $378 |
| Stabilized silt fence, per 100 ft | $748 |
| Inlet protection, silt fence barrier, each | $102 |
| Inlet protection, straw bale, each | $135 |
| Inlet protection, sandbag, each | $141 |
| Inlet protection, gravel and mesh, each | $172 |
These rates come from a state transportation department's 2025 list of erosion-control unit prices, not from Denver work. Run length, soil, access and how often the fence needs service differ on every site, so we quote yours after measuring it, and that signed number is what you pay.
How a Sediment Control Job Runs
1. Review the plan
We read your stormwater plan and walk the site to confirm locations.
2. Install perimeter controls
Silt fence trenched and staked before grading starts.
3. Protect inlets
Inlet barriers placed on and near the site.
4. Maintain
Inspections and repairs after storms, on your schedule.
5. Stabilize and remove
Site seeded, controls removed, disturbed strips restored.

Silt Fence & Construction BMPs Questions
Does my project need silt fence?
If your project needs a Construction Activities Stormwater Discharge Permit, the stormwater plan will show the controls required. Denver may require one for sites that disturb an acre or more, among other triggers. Smaller jobs may still need controls if they could send sediment into the street.
How long does silt fence last?
It lasts as long as it is maintained. Sediment has to be removed before it builds up too high against the fabric, and damaged sections replaced.
Why is my silt fence washing out?
Usually because the fabric was not trenched in, the fence runs downhill instead of along the contour, or too much water is reaching it. We fix the installation and look at whether a swale, wattles or a check dam should take some of the flow.
Do you remove silt fence when the job is finished?
Yes, once the area is stabilized. We pull the fence and seed the strip of disturbed ground it leaves behind.
Can you install inlet protection in the street?
Yes, using devices that filter runoff without backing water up into traffic lanes.
