Seeding Against Golden's Mountainsides

Hydroseeding in Golden is shaped by the valley the town sits in. Golden lies along Clear Creek at the base of the Front Range, in a sheltered valley between Lookout Mountain and North and South Table Mountains. Clear Creek leaves its canyon on the west side of town and flows out through the gap it carved between the two Table Mountains. Almost any project on the edge of town involves a slope.

Hillside lots

Homes on the lower flanks of Lookout Mountain and around the Table Mountains often have cut and fill slopes that are too steep for loose mulch. We hydroseed and then cover with erosion control blankets, or spray a bonded fiber matrix where blankets are hard to anchor. On the steepest faces we add wattles across the slope to break up runoff.

Clear Creek

Clear Creek runs right through downtown and is used for kayaking and recreation. Projects near the creek need a careful sediment control plan: silt fence along the downhill edge, inlet protection on nearby streets, and quick seeding once soil is exposed so sediment does not reach the water.

Elevation and season

Golden sits around 5,784 feet, higher than central Denver. Mountain-facing slopes can stay cool later into spring. We plan seeding dates and mulch rates for the exposure of each site, and many hillside jobs here use a native grass and wildflower mix that suits the foothills better than irrigated turf.

Old town, old yards

Founded in 1859 during the gold rush and once the territorial capital, Golden has some of the oldest neighborhoods in the metro. In-town yards are more about lawn repair and overseeding than slope work, and our grading crews can fix drainage around older foundations before we reseed.

Golden Questions

Can you seed a steep cut slope behind my Golden home?

Yes. After hydroseeding, we hold the cut with a stapled blanket or bonded fiber matrix, and add wattles across the steepest faces.

Is a native mix better than turf on a foothills lot?

On slopes and outer areas it usually is. It suits the setting and needs little water once established.

What is required near Clear Creek?

Expect to keep sediment out of the creek. We use silt fence, inlet protection and quick seeding on bare soil.

Do mountain-facing yards need a different schedule?

Shaded slopes warm later in spring, so we may seed them a little later or use a heavier mulch.
