Industry, Homes and Prairie in Commerce City

Hydroseeding in Commerce City covers a wider mix of sites than most suburbs. The city is home to the only entrance to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, the largest land-based urban wildlife refuge in the country, with 27 square miles of open lakes, wetlands and grasslands. It also has the largest oil refinery in the Rocky Mountain region, rail yards and warehouses, and a steady stream of new homes. We seed all of those, but not the same way.

Farm ground turned industrial

Until the late 1920s, this area was wheat fields, dairies and pig farms. A refinery arrived in 1930 and grain elevators later that decade, and the Arsenal itself was founded in 1942. On industrial and commercial sites the soil is often compacted fill or gravel. Before seeding those areas we rip the surface, add topsoil where turf is expected, and use a durable hydromulch or bonded fiber matrix on banks and detention ponds.

Prairie seeding

Open ground around warehouses, along rail lines and next to the refuge usually does better with a native grass mix than with irrigated turf. Native prairie seeding needs no permanent irrigation once it is established and blends in with the grassland next door.

Low river ground

Commerce City sits at about 5,191 feet, lower than downtown Denver. Henderson Island, once a ranch and trading post in the South Platte, is now the site of the Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds. Sites near the river and its ditches call for silt fence along the low edge and inlet protection on nearby streets whenever soil is opened up.

Parks and new homes

The city has about 840 acres of parks and open space and 25 miles of connected trails. Newer neighborhoods on the north side bring builder work: silt fence, lot-by-lot seeding after final grade, and new lawn installation for owners who move into a home with a dirt yard.

Commerce City Questions

What should be seeded around a warehouse in Commerce City?

A native grass mix is usually the practical choice. It needs no permanent irrigation once established and holds soil on open ground.

Can hydroseed grow on compacted industrial fill?

Not well as-is. We loosen the surface and add topsoil where turf is wanted, and use bonded fiber matrix on banks and pond slopes.

Do you seed detention ponds for commercial sites?

Yes. Pond bottoms and side slopes are a common job, usually with a native mix and bonded fiber matrix on the slopes.

I just moved into a new north-side home with a dirt yard. Can you help?

Yes. We check grade and drainage, add topsoil if needed and hydroseed a new lawn.
