Seeding Along Lakewood's Gulches
Hydroseeding in Lakewood often starts with a look at which gulch the yard drains to. The city sits in the South Platte watershed, and a series of small tributaries cross it from west to east: Lakewood Gulch, Weir Gulch, Sanderson Gulch and Bear Creek, plus Dry Gulch, McIntyre Gulch and Turkey Creek in parts of town. Bare soil on a lot that slopes toward one of those channels can lose a lot of material in a single summer storm.
Green Mountain slopes
Green Mountain, at 6,854 feet, rises in the west-central part of the city. Homes on its lower flanks and other sloped lots in west Lakewood are a common place for erosion control work. On grades too steep for loose mulch to hold, we use straw erosion control blankets pinned to the slope or a bonded fiber matrix sprayed over the seed.
Reservoirs and lakes
Lakewood has a long list of small lakes and reservoirs, including Bear Creek Lake, Kendrick Lake, Cottonwood Lake, Main Reservoir and Smith Reservoir. Work near water calls for a tight sediment control plan: silt fence on the downhill side, wattles or check dams in swales, and seed and mulch applied as soon as grading stops.
Older neighborhoods
Much of Lakewood filled in before the city even incorporated in 1969, when it already had more than 90,000 residents. Many lawns are decades old and tired. For those we usually suggest lawn renovation: core aeration, a topsoil or compost top-dress where the yard is thin, and overseeding rather than a full tear-out.
Redevelopment
The old Villa Italia Mall site was rebuilt as Belmar, and commercial corridors along Colfax and Alameda keep changing. Those projects need inlet protection and perimeter silt fence while dirt is open, followed by hydromulch to close out disturbed areas.

Lakewood Questions
My yard slopes toward a gulch. What should go down with the seed?
On a moderate grade, hydromulch with tackifier is often enough. Steeper banks toward the gulch get a rolled blanket or a bonded fiber matrix spray, plus silt fence or wattles at the bottom while grass fills in.
Can you hydroseed on the lower slopes of Green Mountain?
Yes, as long as we can reach the area with a hose. Steep sections get blankets or bonded fiber matrix so the seed stays in place.
Is it better to overseed my old Lakewood lawn or start over?
If at least half of the grass is healthy, aeration and overseeding is usually the better value. Bare or weed-covered yards are better regraded and hydroseeded.
What do you do to protect a nearby lake during grading?
We place silt fence on the downhill side, protect inlets and swales, and cover bare soil with seed and mulch as soon as grading ends.
