Hydroseeding in Erie, CO

From Coal Town to Subdivision Town

Hydroseeding in Erie is mostly new-lawn work in neighborhoods built over the last few decades. Erie was settled in 1867 after coal was found in the area, its first official underground mine opened in 1876, and it became known as the greatest coal mining town in Colorado. Most mines had closed by 1960 and the Eagle Mine shut in 1978. Since then, farmland and old mining ground around town have been turned into subdivisions.

Coal Creek floods

Erie was hit by major floods in 1890, 1921 and 1972, and a dike was built along Coal Creek after the 1972 flood. Lots near the creek and its low ground need careful grading so water drains where it is meant to, and sediment control during construction so soil does not wash into the creek. We set silt fence on the low side and get seed and mulch on bare soil quickly.

Plains elevation

Erie sits at about 5,072 feet, lower than Denver, out on the plains between Boulder and the I-25 corridor. Wind across open ground can dry out new seed fast. We use tackifier in the hydromulch and recommend getting irrigation running the same day we seed.

Builder phases

New neighborhoods arrive in phases, so we often work for builders: silt fence along lot lines, inlet protection on new streets, hydromulch on disturbed areas between phases, then final seeding. For homeowners who close on a new house with a bare yard, we check grade and topsoil before hydroseeding.

Old Town yards

Old Town Erie has older homes on smaller lots. There the work is more often lawn repair, overseeding and regrading around foundations than full new lawns.

Erie Questions

My Erie lot is near Coal Creek. What should I know before grading?

Low ground near the creek has a flood history, so grading needs to send water the right way, and sediment control should be in place while soil is bare.

How do you keep new seed from drying out in Erie's wind?

We add tackifier to the hydromulch and ask that irrigation be running the day we seed.

Do you seed lots for Erie builders?

Yes, along with silt fence, inlet protection and hydromulch between phases.

My Old Town yard is patchy. Do I need a whole new lawn?

Often not. Overseeding and spot repair can bring it back.
