Yards Above Louisville's Old Mines

Hydroseeding in Louisville takes place on ground with a mining past. The town began with the Welch Mine in 1877, the first coal mine in the Northern Coalfield, and about 30 different mines eventually operated within today's city limits. The Acme Mine drew two million tons of coal from directly beneath the center of town. The last mines closed in the 1950s, and Louisville turned into a suburban residential community.

What mining means for a yard

Old underground workings can lead to uneven settling in some areas. When we grade a Louisville yard and find a low spot or depression that keeps coming back, we fill and compact it before seeding and tell the owner so they can look into it further if needed. We keep grading shallow and avoid concentrating water in one place.

Rebuilding after the Marshall Fire

The Marshall Fire in December 2021 destroyed 553 homes in Louisville and damaged 45 more, driven by winds near 100 miles per hour. Many of those lots have since been rebuilt. Each one ends with a bare, compacted yard that needs ripping, topsoil and seeding, plus silt fence and inlet protection while construction is going on.

Wind and seed

Those same Front Range winds make it hard to establish new grass. We use tackifier in the hydromulch, recommend running irrigation on seeding day, and put blankets or bonded fiber matrix on exposed slopes.

Older neighborhoods

Outside the burn area, Louisville has older homes near the historic downtown and neighborhoods from its suburban growth. Those yards more often need overseeding, lawn repair after projects and drainage fixes than full new lawns.

Louisville Questions

Part of my Louisville yard keeps sinking. Can you seed it?

We can fill, compact and seed the low spot. If it keeps coming back, it is worth having it checked, since parts of town sit over old mine workings.

We rebuilt after the fire. What does the yard need?

Usually ripping the compacted soil, adding topsoil, final grading and then hydroseeding, with sediment control during construction.

How do you keep seed from blowing away?

Tackifier in the hydromulch, irrigation on seeding day and blankets or bonded fiber matrix on exposed slopes.

My older Louisville lawn is thin. What do you recommend?

Aeration and overseeding usually works if a good share of the grass is still alive.
