Seeding Rebuilt Ground in Superior

Hydroseeding in Superior has taken on a new role since December 30, 2021, when the Marshall Fire swept through southwestern Boulder County. Superior lost 398 structures, 393 of them homes, and the Sagamore subdivision was totally lost. Rebuilding means lot after lot of cleared, graded and recompacted soil, and every one of those yards has to be stabilized and replanted.

Rebuild sequence

On a rebuilt lot, the yard is usually the last thing done. While the house goes up, silt fence and inlet protection from our crew keep soil out of Superior's streets. Once the house is up and final grade is set, we loosen compacted areas, add topsoil where it was lost, and hydroseed the lawn and any native areas.

Wind

The fire was driven by unusually strong winds, which are part of life on this stretch of the Front Range. Bare soil dries and blows quickly here. We use tackifier in the hydromulch, recommend irrigation be ready on seeding day, and on exposed slopes use blankets or bonded fiber matrix.

Coal Creek and old mines

Superior grew up along Coal Creek. Coal was found on the Hake homestead in 1864 when floods exposed a seam along the creek, and the Industrial Mine operated south of the creek until 1945. Creek-side lots should have sediment control during work and banks seeded under erosion blankets.

Zone 6a prairie

Superior has a cold semi-arid climate and sits in USDA hardiness zone 6a. Its subdivisions, such as Rock Creek Ranch, went up on ranch and farm land in the 1990s. Native grass on back edges and slopes suits the setting and needs little water once established, with turf kept to the main yard.

Superior Questions

When should we seed the yard on our rebuilt Superior home?

After the house and hardscape are done and final grade is set. Silt fence and inlet protection can go in earlier during construction.

The soil on our rebuilt lot is very hard. Will grass grow?

Not until it is loosened. We rip compacted areas and add topsoil where needed before hydroseeding.

How do you deal with wind on new seed?

Tackifier in the mulch, irrigation ready on seeding day, and blankets or bonded fiber matrix on exposed slopes.

Can we use native grass on part of the yard?

Yes. Native grass works well on slopes and back edges, with turf near the house.
