Grass on Former Orchard Ground

Hydroseeding in Wheat Ridge usually happens on ground with a long growing history. Until the 1960s, the city's identity was agricultural, with orchards and crop fields as the main land use and homes scattered among them, and in the mid-1900s it was known as the Carnation City. That past can leave good soil under some yards, along with old tree roots, buried irrigation lines and uneven grades from former fields.

Built-out city, older lawns

Wheat Ridge is now largely built out with homes, shops and offices. Most of our work is lawn renovation and repair rather than new subdivisions: overseeding thin lawns, replacing worn-out turf, and fixing grades that slope toward the house. Where an old orchard stump or root mass has rotted out, we fill and compact the low spot before seeding.

Clear Creek and Lena Gulch

Clear Creek, a tributary of the South Platte, flows east then northeast through the city, and Lena Gulch runs through the southwest part. West Lake, Tabor Lake and Prospect Lake sit along the creek. Properties near these waters need silt fence or wattles when soil is disturbed, and creek-side banks hold best with seed under an erosion control blanket.

Urban agriculture

Since 2011 city rules have allowed community gardens, farmers' markets and produce stands in any zone district, and many homeowners grow food or keep chickens. Owners converting lawn areas into gardens, or gardens back into lawn, often call us for grading, topsoil and seeding the remaining grass areas.

Climate note

Wheat Ridge's climate is classified as humid continental, a bit different from the semi-arid label used for much of the metro. Lawns still need irrigation through the hot weeks, but well-prepared soil and a good mix go a long way.

Wheat Ridge Questions

My Wheat Ridge yard has sunken spots from old tree stumps. Can you fix that?

Yes. We fill and compact the low spots, add topsoil and then seed so the lawn is level.

I am turning part of my lawn into a garden. Can you reseed the rest?

Yes. We regrade the remaining lawn area, add topsoil if needed and hydroseed it.

How do you protect Clear Creek during yard work?

We place silt fence or wattles on the creek side and cover bare soil with seed and mulch quickly.

Is my older lawn worth saving?

Often it is. Aeration and overseeding can bring back a thin lawn for less than starting over.
